We all know that alcohol abuse is hard on the body and bad for one's health, however, many people still do not realize that alcoholism itself can kill. While heavy drinking puts one at an increased risk of diseases like cancer, it can also be the direct cause of death. That is one reason that here at Fairwinds Treatment Center we provide our patients with intensive, comprehensive, in-patient treatment for alcohol addiction, approaching it like the life-threatening disease that it is.
In a tragic reminder of the effects of long-term alcoholism, actress Elizabeth Peña recently passed away at just 55 years old. According to her death certificate, obtained by multiple news outlets, the Cuban-American had cirrhosis of the liver "due to alcohol," as well as acute gastrointestinal bleeding.
Peña became famous after appearing in the 1987 film "La Bamba." Most recently she played Gloria's mother on the hit comedy "Modern Family." She also acted in the movies "Rush Hour" and "Tortilla Soup," and had many smaller roles in a wide variety of television shows. Peña's nephew, Mario-Francisco Robles, remembered his aunt in The Latino Review.
"Tonight, my family is heartbroken," Robles writes. "There's now a void that will never be filled. All we can do now is remember your sharp sense of humor, your endless hunger for life and your never ending pursuit of happiness."
Our hearts truly go out to Robles and his family during this difficult time. There is perhaps nothing so hard as saying goodbye to a family member too young.
