Alcoholism is rising among British women over 60

Public Health England has recently reported that the number of British women over the age of 60 who are seeking treatment for alcoholism is on the rise. 

Women over 60 now account for 10 percent of people beginning treatment for alcohol addiction in the UK, as opposed to the 6 percent they constituted five years ago. One researcher at King's College Institute of Psychiatry told the BBC that many people are under the misconception, propagated by the media, that alcoholism is primarily a problem with young people who tend to binge drink.

Alcoholism, however, can take many forms and can affect anyone, regardless of age. 

"A common pattern is for regular drinkers, who have had their consumption constrained by the structure of working, tipping into harmful drinking in retirement," noted one psychiatrist to The Guardian.
