Bipolar Disorder

Discover Recovery

Fairwinds Treatment Center is a dually licensed facility. This means our physicians, therapists and counselors address our patient’s issues from both sides; the disorder or addiction, as well as the root cause or causes. Because of this, the team at Fairwinds has been trained to help an individual reduce these manic and depressive periods and balance the individual’s mood. The team can achieve this through individual therapy, group therapy, family therapy, and medication.

Bipolar disorder is a psychiatric disorder that can cause severe mood swings that range from mania to complete depression. Individuals with bipolar can also experience hallucinations or delusions at certain times. These manic episodes can disrupt family, school, work, all aspects of a persons life.

An individual dealing with bipolar disorder goes back and forth between “highs,” (mania) and “lows,” (depression). These high and low periods can last anywhere from a few hours, to a few days, or even weeks or months. It can be very difficult to deal with these issues on your own, individuals need to reach out for help.

A manic period can consist of extreme happiness racing thoughts, hyperactive, an individual can feel as if they’re “jumping out of their skin.” In contrast, a depressive period consists of major sadness, feelings of hopelessness, helplessness, and lack of energy. Bipolar disorder can be related and attribute greatly to eating disorders and chemical dependency issues.

In most people with bipolar disorder, there is no clear cause for the manic or depressive episodes. The following triggers can cause a person dealing with this disorder to become very confused and not know how to handle the situation. These are all factors to look out for in a manic episode with bipolar disorder:

  • Life changes such as childbirth
  • Medications such as antidepressants or steroids
  • Periods of sleeplessness
  • Recreational drug use
