This time of year inevitably entails a slump, as everyone emerges from their spirited holiday events and returns to the daily grind. If you are fighting an addiction, though, the end of large family gatherings can raise another issue altogether. Suddenly, when your habits may well have been concealed by a house full of loved ones taking part in all types of merriment, all of the distractions are gone.
The holidays present an opportunity to conceal your most self-destructive habits, not just from your family, but from yourself. If liquor flowed freely over the last week or two, who was to know if you binged one night after the next? Who would question abnormal sleep patterns and other concerns that could otherwise be readily identified as part of an overarching part of the problem? In addition, the Monday after the festivities have ended is widely recognized as "Blue Monday" - a nod to the consistent increase in bouts of depression and exhaustion that can leave you all the more susceptible to a specific substance in a bid to escape the gray winter days.
However, a whole new year has begun, and there truly is no time like the present to cast off the issues that have dominated your life for so long.
