Middle school is not too early to start having conversations with your kids about making healthy choices regarding alcohol.

Conversations about alcohol should begin in middle school

    admin Alcoholism

Dr. M.K. (Khal) El-Yousef founded Fairwinds over two decades ago to help people struggling from all types of addiction. One of the most common and destructive addictions people struggle with is alcoholism, and as a nationally renowned pioneer in the field of psychiatry and addictions medicine Dr. El-Yousef is uniquely qualified to guide patients through the healing process.

Dr. El-Yousef developed a dual diagnosis treatment program that succeeds in blending a medical psychiatric model with a traditional Twelve-Step Johnson model, creating a truly progressive healing process that involves not only clinical treatment but also therapeutic counseling. Dr. El-Yousef recognized that addiction is not only the result of physical dependency, but is also triggered by certain underlying mental and psychological factors that must be addressed if the patient is ever to achieve long-term recovery. That's why the experienced professionals at Fairwinds focus on holistic treatment, so that the patients can achieve their emotional and spiritual best.

According to The North Carolina Alcoholic Beverage Control Commission, the average age most children first try alcohol is 14, and more than one-third of teen traffic deaths is alcohol related. It's therefore important that parents have open conversations about alcohol when their child is in middle school.

"It's OK to have the conversation and I think kids appreciate it when parents do," middle school principal Elizabeth Battle told WRAL-TV, a local CBS affiliate. "They feel like they have someone to talk to. If the only information they are getting is from their friends, that's not good. But if they're getting information from you, then it's correct."
If you or a loved one is suffering from alcoholism, contact the professionals at Fairwinds, one of the most highly respected alcohol treatment centers in the nation.
