September is National Recovery Month: Substance Abuse and Mental Illness Treatment

admin Addictions, Alcoholism, Anorexia, Anxiety, Bi Polar Treatment, Bulimia, Compulsive Overeating, Depression, Drug Addiction, Dual Diagnosis, Eating Disorders, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Prescription Medication, Trauma Recovery, Videos

Mental illness and substance abuse tend to be two disorders that have stigmas because they are not widely discussed. Those afflicted tend to suffer in silence. However, both of these disorders are much more common than most people realize. Did you know that over 46 million adults in the United States suffer from some form of mental illness each year? To break it down, that is 1 in 5 adults. According to the World Health Organization, an estimated 31 million people suffer from a drug disorder. Unfortunately, this means, whether or not you know it, the chances of someone close to you suffering from a mental illness, drug-related disorder or both is extremely high!

    September is National Recovery Month

September is National Recovery Month. Every September, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration(SAMHSA) strives to increase awareness of mental illness and substance abuse. The theme for 2019 is Join the Voices for Recovery: Together We are Stronger! The SAMHSA wants to:

    • Remove the stigma associated with mental illness and substance abuse
    • Promote a deeper understanding of mental health
    • Encourage those who are suffering from one or both to seek treatment
    • Celebrate those who have recovered or are on the road to recovery

The better understanding we have of mental illness and substance abuse, the easier it will be to provide help for those who need it.

How do You Know if a Loved One is Suffering From Substance Abuse?

It is very common for an individual suffering from substance abuse to hide or deny the issue at hand. It could be because they do not realize they have an issue, they are embarrassed, or they do not know how to ask for help. Let’s take a look at the signs and symptoms that a loved one is suffering from substance abuse and would benefit from treatment.

    • Taking the drug in larger amounts than prescribed or for longer periods of time
    • Talk of weaning themselves off, but then make up excuses as to why they aren’t able to just then
    • Cravings for the drug
    • Inability to manage responsibilities and take care of day-to-day tasks
    • Become withdrawn from social events
    • Continued use of the drug even though it is causing dangerous health problems

Not every person is going to show every single sign. If you know someone who is exhibiting one or more of these signs, it may be time to encourage them to seek treatment for drug and alcohol addiction.

How do You Know if a Loved One is Suffering From Mental Illness?

Everyone handles mental illness differently and presents different signs and symptoms. Here are some of the most common signs and symptoms:

    • Abnormal worry and fear
    • Severe mood changes
    • Lethargy
    • Abuse of drugs and alcohol
    • Depression
    • Suicidal thoughts or actions
    • Inability to handle changes
    • Withdrawn from social situations
    • Delusions and hallucinations

Mental illnesses vary in form and severity. This means that those suffering from mental disorders may show one or more symptoms in varying degrees of severity.
