Addiction is a risk for every person in the modern world. One misadventure, trauma, or medical experience could leave a person with an addiction they were not prepared to deal with. An addiction can be a behavioral addiction like eating disorders or gambling, or it can be created by a dependency-inducing substance like alcohol or drugs. Overcoming an addiction and going through recovery is a personal journey for each person who has faced addiction in their lives. For many, addiction never fully goes away, and once it begins, a person walks a lifetime path of recovery. Less than 10% of people who struggle with addiction ever receive treatment, believing recovery impossible. During September, we want to celebrate the journeys of those in recovery and draw the spotlight to recovery opportunities. Here are the reasons why September is National Recovery Month.
Join the Voices for Recovery: Celebrating Connections
This year’s recovery month theme is “Join the Voices for Recovery: Celebrating Connections”. We’re taking a closer look at the personal stories of those who are going through recovery and those who successfully completed the recovery process. It’s not the big facts that matter, but the little details about a person’s recovery.
Many of the stories will be ongoing, stories we don’t know the endings of because they are still being lived. For every person who is in recovery or has gone through recovery, celebrate recovery month by sharing your story. Supporting loved ones are also a part of the voices for recovery, and loved ones should feel free to share their own unique stories of recovery and overcoming challenges along the way.
Inspiration From Listening to Others
Community and support are important parts of recovery, but there are more ways to gain support than you realize. Sometimes, just reading and hearing the stories of others can make us feel closer and understand our own situations. This month, use the national theme as an opportunity to read dozens, maybe hundreds of other stories of recovery.
Learn the biggest challenges and the most effective techniques experienced by others. You will read about those whose recoveries are a lot like yours, and about recoveries that really put your situation into perspective - one way or another. The insights we gain from learning about others lead to inspiration, and hearing about the journies of others often inspire us to forge ahead on our own path.
Sharing Support With Medical Recovery Patients
National recovery week includes those recovering or has recovered from a serious medical condition. The process of recovery is often very similar to those in medical recovery in rebuilding their lives. They face the challenge of staying positive and healthy when feeling poorly.
Becoming a Voice During National Recovery Month
