Fairwinds Treatment Center was founded over 25 years ago to help patients heal from addiction problems and eating disorders. Dr. M.K. (Khal) El-Yousef founded the center and pioneered the institution’s celebrated dual diagnosis method of treatment.
Dual diagnosis means that not only do patients at Fairwinds receive clinical treatment for their eating disorders, they also undergo therapeutic counseling to help them overcome the psychological struggles that have worsened their condition.
Dr. Pauline Powers is the head of our eating disorders program here at Fairwinds, and approaches her work with over 40 years of experience in the field of eating disorder treatment. She is internationally recognized as a leading researcher and educator in the fight to end eating disorders and heal those individuals suffering from them.
Last week, pop star Demi Lovato shared an inspirational message with her fans on Instagram. “You don’t have to wait till the beginning of a new year to make resolutions for yourself,” she said, in reference to her years-long battle with bi-polar disorder, bulimia and self-harming practices. “It’s all about loving and taking care of the only body you will ever have.”
In 2010, the then 18-year-old attended a rehabilitation center and has since been living a healthy life, although she has been open with her continued struggle to remain on a good path.
