Since 1989, Dr. M.K. (Khal) El-Yousef and the drug addiction treatment professionals at Fairwinds Treatment Center have pioneered a dual diagnosis approach that focuses on not only the physical but mental triggers for substance abuse. This unique combination of clinical treatment and therapeutic counseling has helped Dr. El-Yousef and his team facilitate 25 years worth of successful, long-term patient recoveries by addressing and resolving the underlying psychological and emotional factors that, all too often, can lead others to suffer relapses.
One of the more troubling drug addiction trends seen in recent years has been a staggering rise in opiate use and addiction. Overly aggressive doctor prescriptions have been to blame for many people being given what was thought of as generally harmless quantities of painkillers, only to soon find themselves addicted to these pills. In Ohio, this epidemic has shot up to frightening levels, so much so that the number of opiate dependencies in the state is now on par with the number of Ohioans addicted to alcohol.
“Of more than 87,000 clients treated for addiction 33 percent received alcohol addiction services and 32 percent received opiate addiction services; the latter figure is up from 28 percent in 2012 and more than twice as many as in 2008,” writes Jona Ison for the Coshocton Tribune, a local news publication. “In addition, two county boards reported the majority of treatment partners served people for opiate addiction in 2013 […] More than 1,900 Ohioans died from drug overdoses in 2012, the most recent statewide data available.”
