We at Fairwinds Treatment Center have been following the story of ABC News journalist Elizabeth Vargas, as she works to recover from alcohol addiction. We previously discussed on this blog how the 52-year-old mother of two decided to return to rehab a second time in August. Although we were saddened to hear that Vargas had relapsed, we were glad to see that she was taking immediate steps to aggressively fight this devastating disease.
Recovery from addiction is never easy, however it is entirely possible. Vargas, for example, revealed that she developed her alcohol dependency at least in part because of severe anxiety that she has suffered from since she was a child. The journalist says she began having panic attacks when her father went away to serve in Vietnam. The news anchor also recently experienced a divorce, which likely exacerbated her struggles with anxiety.
However, after finishing her second trip to a rehabilitation center, Vargas says she will soon return to work at ABC.
"So many thx [sic] to everyone for your support! It means so much. I am back to work next week, so happy to come back!" she posted on her Twitter page.
We are glad to hear that Vargas is back on the path to wellness and wish her the best in her recovery.
