Heroin addiction is a growing problem that is increasingly taking its toll across the country.
A new study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows that, during the past decade, the death rate from drug overdoses has quadrupled. Researchers attribute roughly 60 percent of these deaths to heroin, which is up to five times cheaper than other prescription drugs and growing in popularity as a result.
But price isn’t the only factor at play. People addicted to prescription painkillers are 40 times more likely to becoming addicted to heroin. Researchers believe that doctors should seek out alternative methods of alleviating patient pain that do not require opioids.
