Are your children coming home for the holidays after being away at college? If they are, how does a parent, such as yourself, tell whether they’ve been doing drugs?

You shouldn’t be ashamed to wonder whether your children are doing drugs in college. In fact, statistics indicate you should think about it!

In 2013 nearly 40 percent of college students said they regularly used marijuana, compared to just 30 percent in 2006. College students are also more likely than non-college students to use drugs like Adderall® and Ritalin®, both of which can be addicting.

A couple of ways to tell whether your children are doing drugs is by looking at their physical appearance. Do their eyes appear bloodshot? Do they smell different, like they’re trying to mask the stench of drugs? Their personality may have even changed dramatically.

If you believe your children are doing drugs, it’s important to have open communication with them. Remember to calmly approach them, ask open ended questions and always show support. Finally, for further guidance, consult with a professional during the process.
