Is an Eating Disorder Eating Away at Your Life
Compulsive overeating, also known as binge eating, is when a person has an obsessive/compulsive relationship to food. Binge eating disorder is characterized by repeated periods of impulsive binge-eating or continous eating without regular compensatory behaviors.
Many people overeat on occasion, such as having seconds or thirds at a social gathering, or holiday meal. But for some people, overeating crosses the line to binge-eating disorder and it becomes a regular occurrence, shrouded in secrecy.
Compulsive overeating is when a person is eating uncontrollably and cannot stop when on an eating binge. This can be a very dangerous disease and our experienced staff help these patients relearn how to eat. Unlike bulimia, compulsive eaters do not purge, all of the calories are consumed and can result in excessive weight gain.
When you have compulsive overeating or binge-eating disorder, you may be deeply embarrassed about gorging and vow to stop. But you feel such a compulsion that you can't resist the urges and continue binge eating.
Although binge-eating disorder is the most common of all eating disorders, it's still not considered a distinct psychiatric condition. But if you have binge-eating disorder symptoms, treatment can help.
