The professionally trained staff at Fairwinds treats patients with Dr. El-Yousef's celebrated dual diagnosis methodology that works to heal not only the patient's physical symptoms but also the emotional, mental and psychological wounds that might be contributing to the illness.
Additionally, nationally renowned eating disorder specialist Dr. Pauline Powers leads the treatment and recovery of eating disorder patients here at Fairwinds, helping to restore their sense of physical and emotional well-being.
Recently, Bodywhys, the Eating Disorder Association of Ireland, published statistics revealing that the majority of Irish women who reach out for help are not 19 to 24-year-olds, as was most commonly believed. Instead, most of the women are between the ages of 25 and 35.
One psychotherapist at Bodywhys theorized that the many life changes occurring in that age range, including marriage, homeownership and children, put increased amounts of pressure on women.
"There can be a number of triggers at any age," she said to The Independent, a local news publication. "It's usually something happens in a person's life that causes them conflict, stress and that's difficult, and they find themselves in a situation where they might not feel strong enough to deal with it."
Many people view eating disorders as rooted in insecurities from youth, but it's important for the public to acknowledge that the disease does not discriminate based on age or gender. Eating disorders are serious, sometimes life-threatening conditions that can't and shouldn't be reduced to one age or cultural group.
