Jane Fonda was recently presented with the American Film Institute’s Lifetime Achievement award, honoring her decades of contributions to the film and theater industries. The 76-year-old won Oscar awards for her performances in Klute and Coming Home, and was nominated for several other performances over the course of her career. In 2005, she shared personal details about her decades-long struggle with bulimia in a memoir titled My Life So Far.
“Writing a memoir if you really go deep, it is extremely cathartic,” said Fonda, as reported by the L.A. Times. “It can help you understand where you are going. You can’t know where you are going if you don’t know where you have been. Writing my memoir showed me where I had been and things about myself and patterns.”
Fonda’s mother Frances committed suicide when she was just 12 years old, and she describes her father as cold and distant.
