Success/Outcome Studies

Success Rate - Addictions

Fairwinds Treatment Center has a success rate that is much higher than the national average. This is accomplished by Fairwinds providing medical model treatment approach. Our attending Psychiatrist is able to work with the patient on a daily basis to determine underlying mental health issues. Successful treatment for addictions increases dramatically when the patient is also treated for issues such as depression anxiety or bipolar disorder. Diagnosing, then treating both problems more than doubles the success rate for people having alcohol and/or drug dependence according to studies done by the National Institute for Mental Health.

Fairwinds also promotes a treatment for success philosophy based on the patient following through with the aftercare and discharge plan. If the patient follows through with the recommended plan which may include follow-up visits with a therapist, doctor, and attendance in regular support group meetings; (AA, NA) treatment success increases, however non-compliance with aftercare plan results in limited success rates.

Success Rate - Eating Disorders

The following graph is taken from the program evaluation from the Fall of 1998 thru Dec. 2000. Future outcome studies will be released in 2003.

ANBP - Anorexia Nervosa, Bing/Purge Type
ANR - Anorexia Nervosa, Restricting Type
BN - Bulimia Nervosa
EDNOS - Eating Disorder, Not Otherwise Specified

Weight Change During Hospitalization

ANBP patients gained an average of 21 lbs., ANR patients gained an average of 20 lbs., BN patients has less than 1 lb. Change in weight and EDNOS patients had an average change in weight of 29 lbs. This is as expected: anorexia nervosa patients were underweight and needed to gain weight, bulimic patients were normal weight and the EDNOS patients were overweight and needed to lose weight.

Conclusions

The goals of the program were to (1) provide adequate care to patients with eating disorders and to (2) ensure adequate lengths of hospital stay to prevent relapse. These severely ill patients required lengthy hospital stays and additional partial hospitalization days, but were able to normalize their weight and generally relinquish binge eating and purging. The very positive finding that weights were maintained at follow-up is encouraging. The current average length of follow-up is 14 months.
