Parents of teens at Deerfield High School near Chicago received a sobering update from a six-person panel of experts this week.
The panel addressed more than 350 people about the prevalence of drug addiction in United States high schools. The panel also screened a film called "Neuqua On Drugs" that was created by students at a high school in Naperville after a classmate died from an overdose.
"Don't think it can't happen here with your kid," Lake County State's Attorney Mike Nerheim, a panel member, told the audience. "Neuqua Valley is a high performing school like many in Lake County. I often hear 'but she was an honor roll student' or 'he was captain of the team.'"
The panel emphasized the fact that addiction is a disease that can strike anyone at any time, regardless of wealth, social status or academic success. The panel members urged parents to watch their children for signs of addiction, so treatment could be sought as early as possible.
