Military veterans are disproportionately likely to suffer from prescription opioid addiction, since they are often given narcotics to treat combat injuries.
In fact, the number of military personnel suffering from prescription drug addiction doubled between 2002 and 2005, and almost tripled between 2005 and 2008. In July of last year, an estimated 1 million U.S. veterans were using opioid painkillers as part of their treatment plans.
However, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has now approved several new tamperproof painkillers that may be successful in limiting the abuse of narcotics among war veterans.
