Now in its 23rd year, many around the nation are celebrating National Recovery Month. September is dedicated to the individuals who have or are currently suffering from substance abuse.
Substance abuse is often a misunderstood term. Some believe addicts abuse drugs or alcohol because they have character flaws or choose to hurt themselves. They often think addicts can overcome their addiction whenever they want. However, this is a misconception.
An addict may fall into their destructive lifestyle to ease suffering, relieve stress or escape reality. They may also accidently get hooked if the drugs they’re using were once prescription medicines. And these are only a couple of reasons.
National Recovery Month is a time to educate those about why addicts abuse substances and how the disease can be treated. Take a moment this month to think about how you can help help someone overcome their addiction.
